For some families, medicine has been a career path proudly passed down through the generations, but a recent survey suggests this tradition may be on the way out in the UK.

Of the 1800 senior hospital doctors, GPs, trainees and charity supporters surveyed, 67% said they would not recommend the career path to their children, but almost as many (62%) said they would still study medicine themselves if they had their time again.

The survey by the Royal Medical Benevolent Fund also found:

92% of doctors think that working conditions in UK hospitals have deteriorated in the past decade;

93% are concerned by the number of colleagues leaving the profession; and

93% think hospital doctors are forced into uncomfortable decisions due to pressures in the NHS, such as discharging patients early to free up beds.
