Many drug ingredient names will be changed from April 2016 to reflect international standards, the TGA has announced.

In many cases this will involve only minor spelling differences such as dropping the ‘Oe’ from oestradiol to estradiol and replace “g’ with “d’ as in from lignocaine to lidocaine.

Or the ‘p’ replaced with ‘f’, such as cephalexin to become cefalexin.

The ‘e’ will also be dropped from ‘eformotrol’ to become ‘formoterol’.

For significant changes both drug names will be used on the label over a three-year transition period.
