Picture of the week: Leg “baby-sits” hand

This amazing picture shows how surgeons saved a man’s severed hand by grafting it onto his leg.

The man from central China lost his hand in an industrial accident but doctors could not immediately reattach the hand because of severe tissue damage.

Instead they grafted the hand to the man’s lower right calf and connected it to blood vessels in the region to keep the tissue alive.

A surgeon from New York who commented on the novel technique in an interview with CNN said: “It’s like the leg is just babysitting the amputated hand until the arm is ready for it.”
