Podcasts

14 Dec 2021

Precision oncology has rapidly advanced in the past decade and now allows for a personalised treatment approach for a number of cancers.  Despite this, there continue to be access barriers, funding limitations, and challenges in navigating this new environment.

Listen to Professor David Thomas in conversation with guests Associate Professor Craig Underhill and Doctor Damien Kee as they explore three areas related to precision oncology here in Australia:

Advances in precision oncology and the central role of clinical trials

Regional and rural access to precision medicine technology

The role of the Australian Rare Cancers Portal*

A/Prof Craig Underhill is Director of Cancer Services, Albury Wodonga Health, and Clinical Director, Hume Regional Integrated Cancer Services, Regional Lead Clinician, Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre and Dr Damien Kee is a medical oncologist based at the Austin Hospital where he leads the melanoma and skin cancer oncology team, as well as at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. He is a senior clinician researcher in the Rare Cancers Laboratory at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.

*The Australian Rare Cancer (ARC) Portal is an online referral service that aims to improve outcomes and access to research for Australians diagnosed with a rare cancer. It can assist in a number of ways: identify management guidelines for rare cancers, identify additional tests that may help establish diagnosis or guide treatment, interpret existing genetic reports or suggest when a referral for genetic testing is appropriate, streamline access to national rare cancer specialists (including telehealth or multidisciplinary groups), identify relevant clinical trials or other research opportunities.  For further information go to arcportal.org.au
