A website which claimed to put patients and GPs in contact with Australia’s “best” specialists has been cleared of breaching the Medical Board of Australia’s advertising guidelines.

The website specialistdoctors.com.au was co-founded by former AMA president Associate Professor Kerryn Phelps and colorectal specialists Graham Newstead from Prince of Wales Hospital and David Lubowski from St George Hospital.

But the ‘specialist doctors’ website came under fire for potentially breaching the boards advertising guidelines by only listing specialists who are: “recognised by his/her peers as being at the very peak of their specialty and/or subspecialty and who is caring, has both an approachable and caring manner and is known for his/her good judgement”.

However in a statement obtained by the limbic the medical board cleared the three founders of any breach of the rules.

“From the information that AHPRA has received, it does not appear that the practitioners involved in the Specialist Doctors’ website have breached the Medical Board of Australia’s advertising guidelines,” the statement said.

The specialistdoctors.com.au website is currently undergoing maintenance.
