THANZ announces death of haematologist Dr Claire McLintock

Tributes have been paid to New Zealand-based haematologist and former THANZ president Dr Claire McLintock who has died aged 57 years of metastatic breast cancer.

Born in Dundee, Scotland, Dr McLintock’s previous roles included clinical director of regional maternity services at Auckland City Hospital, and a haematologist and obstetric physician at National Women’s Health.

An advocate for women’s health and women and girls with bleeding disorders, Dr McLintock held several leadership roles in haematology including as President of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH, 2018–2020), Chair of the ISTH Education Committee, President of the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand (THANZ, 2009-2011), and Vice-Chair of World Thrombosis Day steering committee, standing in line to become the Chair in 2023.

“Claire’s service and passion for early career programming, education and equal access to knowledge regardless of location made a significant impact on the ISTH and in the lives of her peers around the world,” said Dr Flora Peyvandi, President of Council.

“She will be greatly missed by so many, including her patients – who she always drew strength from – and who influenced Claire to be a tremendous awareness ambassador through the World Thrombosis Day campaign, which she helped shape into the global campaign it is today.”

In 2019 Dr McLintock was awarded Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her service to haematology and obstetrics.

In December 2022, Dr McLintock wrote an article (link here) describing her cancer journey and how it had affected her life since she was diagnosed with. breast cancer in 2003.

“Claire McLintock was a champion for women and girls with bleeding disorders. Her passing is a huge loss for our community, but most especially for her family,” said Dawn Rotellini, Lay Member, World Federation of Haemophilia Board of Directors.
