There is no convincing evidence that probiotics have an effect on gut microbiota in healthy people, a systematic review concludes.

The analysis of seven randomised controlled trials found that only in one study did probiotics alter the structure and diversity of faecal bacteria.

“While there is some evidence from previous reviews that probiotic interventions may benefit those with disease associated imbalances of the gut microbiota, there is little evidence of an effect in healthy individuals,” the researchers from Denmark concluded in the study published in Genome Medicine.
