A trippy image of acetaminophen under the microscope has featured in the inaugural BMC ‘Research in progress’ photography competition.

 The image, captioned Night Sky on Planet Acetaminophen, was taken by Karl Gaff, an Irish lab tech ‘with a passion for imaging and microscopy’.

“This image is actually a sliver of a thin film of acetaminophen, commonly known as Paracetamol, imaged to a microscope configured for polarised light. The stars in the background are really just out water droplets that lie in a different focal plane,” he told the open access publisher.
