Prof Walter Abhayaratna

Cardiologists are included in the Queen’s Birthday 2020 Honours List for their service to the profession.

Professor Walter Abhayaratna was awarded an OAM in the General Division for his service to medicine in the ACT.

He is a senior staff specialist, consultant cardiologist and Clinical Director of Medicine at the Canberra Hospital and Health Service. 

Professor Abhayaratna holds a number of NHMRC research grants for clinical research into the prevention of cardiovascular disease and is the director of clinical trials at ACT Health.

Dr Joseph Montarello

He is currently a member of the Medical Services Advisory Committee.

Interventional and structural cardiologist Dr Joseph Montarello was also awarded an OAM in the General Division for his service to medicine and particularly for cardiology.

Dr Montarello is a former medical director of the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and also works in private practice at GenesisCare.
