Four Australian research centres have made it into the prestigious Nature Index top 100 for NPO/NGO institutions for biomedical sciences.

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research topped Australia’s rankings in 19th spot followed by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute (55th), the Garvan Institute (59th) and the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (69th).

The Nature Index was otherwise dominated by European and US institutions.

France held the most number of positions (29) with the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology (IGBMC) and Pasteur Institute ranked 14th and 15th.

The US had 27 entries in the top 100 with Scripps Research and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies ranked the highest in second and sixth position.

Germany was able to claim the top position with the Max Plank Society. In total, German institutions took nine positions with Spain taking seven.

Proving yet again that Australia punches above its weight, our four listings matched the number of institutions listed for both the UK and China.
