Something strange is afoot

Here’s an interesting fact. Most people can’t tell their toes apart. In a study Oxford University researchers asked people to close their eyes while their toes were ‘gently prodded’.

While this happened, the volunteers were asked to identify which of their toes was being poked. But not one participant was able to identify which of their toes was being prodded 100 percent of the time.

Unexpectedly, just under half of participants also reported a sense that one of their toes was missing.

Some people could only get the right answer 20 percent of time, found the study that was published in the journal Perception.

The results could help us understand better conditions that result in agnosia or other misperceptions of our own body, such as in anorexia nervosa, the researchers said.
