Consultant gastroenterologist Mark Lane has taken the helm of the RACP, promising to steer a stable ship through any choppy waters ahead.

Based at Auckland City Hospital in New Zealand, Clinical Associate Professor Lane has been president-elect since his election in 2016, a poll marred by controversy after allegations of “irregularities” triggered calls for the results to be null and void.

But an independent investigation by found no evidence of impropriety.

During his pre-election pitch, Professor Lane described his priorities as including offering members more value for money, clear communication on issues of concern and transparency about how and why decisions are made.

In a statement he warned the college faced a “number of potential challenges” and would need to become “increasingly responsive, agile and future focused”.

“These include competition from other education providers who might seek to train specialist physicians, revalidation and increasing regulation are realities.

“Unless the College remains active in these areas its validity is likely to be threatened.”

The college farewelled its outgoing president, Queensland geriatrician Catherine Yelland, who steps down after two years as president.

In a tribute to the outgoing president, the college honoured Dr Yelland noting her work in raising the profile of the health issues caused by offshore detention and alcohol advertising to children, and deliver a framework which will see the college take a leadership role in Indigenous health.
