International award for Aussie radiation oncologist

Emeritus Professor Lester Peters, from the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and University of Melbourne, has been awarded a prestigious Gray Medal from the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements (ICRU).

No stranger to accolades throughout his career, Professor Peters has also been the recipient of other awards including the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) Gold Medal (2003), the Gold Medal of the Juan A del Regato Foundation (2004); the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Faculty of Radiation Oncology, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (2007), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Victorian Department of Health (2012).

He was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2001 for service to medical research, education and clinical practice in the field of radiation oncology, resulting in improved treatments for people with cancer, particularly in the head and neck region.

Professor Peters started his career in Queensland before moving overseas to a research fellowship in London and his first faculty appointment in the Department of Radiotherapy at the University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. While in the US, he was ASTRO President from 1993 to 1994.

Professor Peters returned to Australia to take up the inaugural Chair in Radiation Oncology at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 1995. He was also Dean of the RANZCR Faculty of Radiation Oncology from 2003 to 2004.
