Drug companies should get rewards of more than $1bn for each new antibiotic they bring to the market, a report on antimicrobial resistance concludes.

According to the Tackling Drug-Resistant Infections globally report $40 billion was required to fight antimicrobial resistance. The report, commissioned by the UK Prime Minister, proposes a system of market entry awards of “around one billion USD” for effective treatments in areas of most urgent need.

The report also proposes better pay for infectious diseases specialists and the reduction of unnecessary antimicrobials in agriculture.
