Recently promoted by Prime Minister Tony Abbott to become the new Minister for Health and Sport Sussan Ley is the second female in the federal cabinet. But who is she? Here’s 10 facts to get you acquainted, however we admit we struggled to find some relevant to health:

1. Ms Ley was born in Nigeria to British parents and emigrated to Australia when she was 13.
2. In her school days in Canberra she used to be a spiky purple haired punk.
3. She is a qualified pilot and has worked as an air traffic controller but failed to make it as an airline pilot.
4. She has a bachelor of economics, and various Masters degrees in tax law and accounting.
5. She was elected in 2001 and holds the seat of  Farrer, an electorate which is roughly the same size as New Zealand and four times the size of the UK.
6. She has held shadow portfolios for Housing and Women (2007), Justice and Customs/Assistant Treasurer (2008 to 2009) and Childcare, Early Childhood Learning & Employment Participation (2010 to 2013).
7. She is 53 and has three children.
8. Her chief aim in her new portfolio is to lift healthcare standards for people in remote Australia.
9. Her working style with cross-bench senators is ‘conciliatory and approachable’
10. Just as well, as she is tasked with getting the reworked yet controversial GP co-payment through Parliament.
