The Head of Neurology at Royal Adelaide Hospital, Associate Professor Tim Kleinig, has been awarded the Stroke Foundation President’s Achievement Award for his work in improving the quality of stroke care in South Australia.

Announcing the Award on 5 May, the Foundation noted that Associate Professor Kleinig – who is also Clinical Director for Stroke at Country Health SA – has played an integral role in the implementation of the highly successful South Australian Telestroke Service.

“Tim’s compassion for vulnerable groups in the community, in particular Indigenous Australians and those living in rural and regional parts of the state, is clear,” the Foundation said in a statement.

“Through this service, neurologists at metropolitan stroke units are able to support stroke patients at the state’s 61 country hospitals 24 hours a day, seven days a week, via phone and videoconference, ensuring all South Australians regardless of where they live, have timely access to quality stroke care,”

The Award also recognises Associate professor Kleinig’s work in clinical stroke research programs as Director of Clinical Stroke Research at the SA Health and Medical Research Institute.

“Tim has published widely in stroke research and is involved in a number of local, national and international stroke trials. Tim was a member of Stroke Foundation’s Clinical Council for six years. During this time, he provided valuable advice and clinical input on a wide variety of areas,” it said.

“He has played an integral role in driving improvements in the quality of stroke care in South Australia, improvements which have been seen in the results of Stroke Foundation’s National Stroke Acute Audit.”
