Breast implant related lymphomas on the increase

Blood cancers

20 Apr 2017

The number of Australian cases of anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) associated with breast implants has risen to 51.

In an update to their December 2016 Alert which reported 46 cases including three deaths, the TGA said all cases have occurred in women with textured or polyurethane implants.

The most common presenting symptoms are delayed effusion/seroma or, less commonly, a mass or lymphadenopathy.

Fine needle aspiration or core biopsy specimens should be sent for cytology, flow cytometry or molecular studies to confirm the diagnosis.
