Victorian gastroenterologist Associate Professor Grant Phelps has been appointed as president of Hepatitis Australia.

Professor Phelps, who previously established Victoria’s first regionally based liver clinic in Ballarat, takes over the role from former Department of Health senior public servant Felicity McNeill PSM.

In recent times Professor Phelps has worked as an independent healthcare management consultant with an emphasis on clinical governance roles, as well as director of the Rural Workforce Agency Workforce (RWAV) .

He also has an academic appointment at Deakin University as Associate Professor of Clinical Leadership.

In a statement, Hepatitis Australia said Professor Phelps’ familiarity with all aspects of the health system will be highly beneficial to the work Hepatitis Australia is looking to undertake over the next couple of years.

“He will be a valuable asset as the organisation continues to push for greater uptake of hepatitis C cures and forges an effective community level response to hepatitis B in Australia.

Professor Phelps said he was looking forward to working with a new CEO of Hepatitis Australia, as the current CEO Helen Tyrrell also steps down.

“I’m excited about leading the Board of Hepatitis Australia, recognising that much good work has been done to change how we treat and support people with hepatitis C, but that much remains to be done, particularly for people with hepatitis B,” he said.

Hepatitis Australia thanked Felicity McNeill for her leadership saying her previous experience as head of the Federal Health Department’s pharmaceutical benefits branch had been invaluable in forging effective, ongoing relationships with government.
