Treadmill desks not the answer for sedentary workers

Obesity

Treadmill desks increase the daily steps of overweight and obese office workers but do not lead to weight loss, research shows.

The small 12 week study found workers increased the number of daily steps by more than a thousand but did not have any significant change in weight or BMI.

The 40 employees involved in the study only used the treadmills about half the time they were asked to, averaging 45 minutes a day on the machines.

The benefits of the desks may not justify the cost and other challenges that come with implementing them, the researchers concluded.
