Queen’s Birthday Honours for endocrinologists

Professor Helena Teede

Professor Helena Teede has been recognised with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her significant service to medical education and research, to endocrinology, and to women’s health.

Professor Teede is an endocrinologist at Monash Health, Director of the Monash Centre for Health Research Implementation and co-director of the Monash Institute of Medical Engineering.

She was also recognised this year with an Endocrine Society (US) Laureate Award for Outstanding Leadership in Endocrinology and in 2018 with an Outstanding Contribution Award from Diabetes Australia.

Professor Teede’s body of work on women’s, children’s and metabolic health includes major contributions such as international guidelines on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Dr Frank Alford received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to endocrinology.

He is a former director of endocrinology and diabetes at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, a Professorial Fellow at the University of Melbourne, and a founding member of the National Association of Diabetes Centres (NADC).

Dr Alford is also a past president of the Australian Diabetes Society and a recipient of an ADS Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr Geoff Byrne also received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to paediatric endocrinology.

Dr Byrne is a former director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital (now Perth Children’s Hospital) and a champion for outreach clinics in Bunbury, Rockingham, Wagin, Albany, Geraldton, Northam, Kalgoorlie and Esperance.

He was a foundation member and former president of the Australian Paediatric Endocrine Group (APEG) and chaired the Growth Hormone Advisory Committee. Dr Byrne has previously been awarded an honorary life membership of APEG.

Professor Diana Magliano received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to epidemiology, and to tertiary education.

Professor Magliano is head of the Diabetes and Population Health Unit at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.

She is also a past president of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group.
