GPs can now diagnose diabetes in high-risk patients based on raised HbA1c only. Up until now HbA1c testing was only subsidised for monitoring glycaemic control in patients with established diabetes. The new MBS item will mean patients will not have to undergo fasting blood glucose and oral glucose tolerance tests.
