Doctors less likely to divorce

Risk factors

Doctors are less likely to be or to have been divorced than those in other occupations – including lawyers, nurses, and other health care professionals, research shows.

However the large study using census data in the US found that female physicians were one and a half times more likely to be divorced than male physicians of a similar age.

Females may have to make greater trade-offs between professional obligations and family life which may contribute to lower quality of relationships, the study authors suggested.

“Despite concerns about whether the demanding nature of physicians’ work leads to higher rates of divorce, divorce among physicians is less common than among the general population and several healthcare professions,” they concluded.
