Diabetes on the rise across the globe

The number of people with diabetes is projected to rise to 693 million by 2045 — with the greatest rise in southern Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, according to the  the annual diabetes atlas released today by the International Diabetes Federation.

 

Key facts from the atlas

 

  • 1 in 11 adults has diabetes (425 million)

  • 1 in 2 adults with diabetes is undiagnosed (212 million)

  • 12% of global health expenditure is spent on diabetes
    ($727 billion)

  • 1 in 6 births is affected by hyperglycaemia in pregnancy

  • Three quarters of people with diabetes live in low and middle income countries

  • Over 1 million children and adolescents have type 1 diabetes

  • Two-thirds of people with diabetes live in urban areas (279 million)

  • Two-thirds of people with diabetes are of working age (327 million)
