Young people with type 1 diabetes had a greater decline in some aspects of IQ compared to healthy controls. Earlier age of disease onset and a history of hypoglycemic seizures were risk factors that put children at higher risk. The academic progress of these children should be monitored and educational support provided if needed say the Melbourne researchers.
