19 Mar 2015

There were 40,829 hospitalisations for diabetes complications in 2013-2014 that were potentially preventable, the latest statistics show.

This figure accounted for 14% of all potentially preventable hospitalisations for any chronic disease, according to the AIHW report.

5.2 of these hospitalisations per 1,000 population were attributed to indigenous Australians and 1.1 per 1,000 population were for other Australians, the figures showed.

There were also 2,974 emergency admissions relating to type 2 diabetes complications.

Coding changes between 2009–10 and 2013–14 have affected the comparability over time of data reported for diabetes, the report cautioned.
