The Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, Osteoporosis Australia and Endocrine Society of Australia have collectively rejected claims by celebrity chef Pete Evans that calcium obtained from dairy foods can “strip calcium from bones” and “cause or contribute to osteoporosis”.

“Dairy foods are an important and inexpensive source of calcium for many individuals, and most Australians obtain the majority of their calcium intake from dairy sources,” the organisations said in a statement.

“Men and women with osteopaenia or osteoporosis should be reassured and confident that a good dairy intake does not have adverse effects upon skeletal health,” it said.

Referring to the celebrity chef’s recent comments on fluoride, sunscreen and calcium AMA President Dr Michael Gannon said he had some “fairly flaky ideas”.

“We know some of the people he communicates with, in terms of his so-called sources. I think he should stick to his very obvious talents in the kitchen and leave the science to the scientists,” he said.
