Hypertension diet may prevent gout flares

Gout

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet may significantly reduce serum uric acid, according to a randomised study.

The diet which is high in whole grains, fruit, and vegetables and low in red meat and saturated fats may therefore reduce flares in patients with gout, the authors suggested in their paper published in Arthritis & Rheumatology.

They also found that a higher sodium intake decreased SUA, a finding which they said “enhances our knowledge of urate pathophysiology and risk factors of hyperuricemia”.
