British GPs ignoring obesity

UK GPs are failing to treat or manage obesity and overweight in their patients appropriately, an analysis of patient records suggests. Looking at the health records of over 90,000 overweight or obese patients between 2005-2012 the researchers discovered that 90 percent of overweight patients had no weight management intervention recorded in their notes. A weight management intervention was more likely to be recorded in the health records of obese patients, but it was still not documented in more than 80% of cases the study in BMJ Open found. The findings may reflect poor documentation, but may also indicate a lack of patient access to appropriate weight management interventions, they said.
